Betty Friedan's Feminine Mystique
I haven’t read Betty Friedan’s Feminine Mystique, but the coverage of her recent death made me want to. As noted in the Times, the 1963 book is one of the most influential nonfiction books of the 20th century, selling millions of copies and helping promote the modern-day women’s movement. It skewers the myth of the ever-cheerful Ozzie-and-Harriet housewife, and pointedly wonders: What happened to the suffragette spirit that so animated earlier decades, specifically the 1920s?
The book ought to be standard equipment with every mini-van sold.
