Baker to the Rescue?
Clearly, the political winds have changed. The demise of Tom Delay, W.’ s dismal approval ratings, Karl Rove skating just inches from an indictment — none of that seemed likely just a few seasons ago. Even Rush Limbaugh, who always seems to be suffering from a mild form of dementia, was forced to work out a deal with prosecutors. (Sadly, the deal won’t take Rush off the air. Unless he can’t stay away from the hard stuff.)
Of all the developments, the most telling is Bush’s decision to enlist James A. Baker to travel to Baghdad to seek a solution to the mess there. As the longtime counselor to Bush Sr., Baker is the kind of advisor W. has shunned (though Baker’s fancy footwork did help W. win his unlikely victory in the 2000 election). Asking Baker for help is Bush’s way of saying “Help! I need someone who’s in touch with reality to save me from drowning!” Let’s hope Baker’s trip to Iraq results in another unlikely victory.
